Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) is a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance in civil matters to help low-income individuals and groups in Ohio achieve self-reliance, and equal justice and economic opportunity. ABLE works to prevent homelessness and protect renters from uninhabitable living conditions. Their work also helps protect seniors and veterans–ensuring access to healthcare and education–and support for the welcoming into communities and due process for immigrants. They help rebuild neighborhoods and empower residents. In all, ABLE works to lift up the voices of people often unheard and left behind!

CHF provided a health equity grant to ABLE, Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc., to help provide legal assistance to Clark County residents. ABLE reported they helped a client who was shot in the head and sought ABLE’s assistance to apply for a U Visa based on his cooperation with law enforcement. The funding will help him live securely and receive the medical care he needs to recover from his injury. A U Visa is a category of non-immigrant status for victims of crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and who are helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of a crime. CHF funding also provided assistance for those applying for TPS (temporary protected status) and permanent legal means to stay in the U.S.
