GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT: Jefferson Street Oasis (JSO) Community Garden

A HEAL (healthy eating, active living) grant was awarded to Jefferson Street Oasis Community Garden to encourage increased participation in its gardening program and to expand the garden plots. Many people responded and, to accommodate the demand, Jefferson Street Oasis added plots, fencing, access to water and help with soil preparation. Located in an urban area, the community garden increases access to and awareness of healthy food, helps meet food insecurity issues and encourages the camaraderie of gardening. In the near future, Jefferson Street Oasis is planning for wheelchair accessible raised bed garden plots.
