Community Health Foundation supported the Thriving Families program with a $10,000 grant. The youth and instructors in this program decided to implement a “Sticker Shock” campaign, a prevention initiative designed to raise awareness about the legal consequences to retailers and individuals of providing alcohol to minors.
The plan was to attach warning labels to alcohol packaging, refrigerator cases and cartons at retail locations. The labels were aimed at reminding adults not to purchase alcohol for individuals under age 21 and to inform underage youth it is illegal to purchase alcohol.
An educational session highlighted the accessibility of alcohol to youth as well as the prevalence of alcohol advertising in underserved neighborhoods.
Youth and their families as well as coalition partners then visited retail locations to apply the stickers and to promote the campaign. The students successfully carried out a real- world prevention strategy, reinforcing the core values of youth empowerment, community collaboration and substance use prevention.
